In a decisive step toward making India a global leader in the “Quantum Era,” the Ministry of Science and Technology has granted approval to 23 academic institutions to establish state-of-the-art Quantum Teaching Laboratories.
The announcement was made by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh during a review meeting of the National Quantum Mission (NQM). This move is designed to bridge the massive skill gap in quantum computing, communication, and sensing.
Key Highlights of the Approval:
- Expansion Plan: While 23 institutions have received the green light in the first phase, nearly 100 additional proposals are currently under rigorous evaluation.
- The Goal: These labs will provide undergraduate and postgraduate students with hands-on experience in quantum simulation, cryptography, and sensing—moving beyond purely theoretical textbooks.
- State Coverage: The approved institutions are spread across various states, including significant representation from Hyderabad (Telangana) and Maharashtra (VNIT Nagpur).
- Strategic Alignment: The labs will support the recently launched Undergraduate Minor Course in Quantum Technologies, developed in collaboration with AICTE.
Impact on Students and Job Seekers
This update is particularly relevant for engineering and science students looking for future-ready careers:
- Skill Development: Students will now have access to high-precision atomic clocks, magnetometers, and quantum key distribution (QKD) setups.
- Job Creation: The NQM is expected to create thousands of specialized roles in defense, cybersecurity, and financial data protection by 2030.
- Funding Support: Under the NQM framework, the government is providing 75% to 100% of the project cost to set up these labs, ensuring world-class infrastructure even in non-IIT institutions.
Additional Science & Tech Updates from the Meeting:
- India International Science Festival (IISF) 2026: Pune has been identified as the proposed venue for the next mega-science event.
- Naval Navigation: Plans are finalized to launch a new navigation satellite specifically for the Indian Navy around May 2026.
- National Technology Day: A massive exhibition showcasing over 500 indigenous technologies is scheduled for May 11–13 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
